t a t t o o

Just a small sketch.

I stumbled across a book on tattoos in the library this week. I've considered for a while getting a tattoo (although to be honest I don't think it's something I could actually go through with!) but I never thought that I could decide on something meaningful enough to have inked into my skin permanently. This type of tattoo though, something more tribal, organic, decorative...I love the look of. Swirling, organic lines seem more like a natural extension of the human body than a man-made addition. Don't get me wrong, I love tattoos of all kinds, but these in particular speak to me.

I'd like to do some more pieces dealing with this idea...finger's crossed!

r u l e s

Almost everything I've learned about life and love, I've learned from watching movies. I feel like the Cableguy, my sense of reality warped by Hollywood writers. Well, Hollywood lied to me. Real life is not a movie. There is no universal set of rules to follow and life does not have a formula. I am in control of myself and my life, I can do what I want to, when I want to. I must follow my intuition, not the opinions of others.

This must be how normal people feel.

*EDIT: I feel like whenever I draw a character smiling, they seem quite smug and the drawing seems dumb to me. Do you think that means something?

Antigone and Ismene
Marker, pen& ink on paper.
I did some reflection recently and in doing so realized that my normal method of colouring takes way. too. long.  So, in the spirit of trying something new, I threw caution to the wind and took a much speedier approach to a pencil drawing I had done over the break (think um 1 or 2 hours instead of 10). While the results are a littler sloppier than I'm used to, and I'll probably redraw this and recolour, I'm pretty pleased with it.
(ps THERE WILL BE MORE ANTIGONE)

Flash vs no flash : some ugly babies that I love.
I figure that creating art is a lot like giving birth sometimes. You plan, you work, you make a mess and in the end, you're left with a thing -- a thing that until that point didn't exist. I know that in the grand scheme of the world, the works that I create aren't always unique, but all in all, I give them life. They are my creation, my "children" and if and when they're hideous, frightening or just plain not good, I still love them.

I'm admittedly not a horror fan, but this Korean film is one of my all-time favourites. A Tale of Two Sisters combination of dark, delicate cinematography and hauntingly beautiful music has stayed with me long after viewing.

Do know what's really scary? You want to forget something. Totally wipe it off your mind. But you never can. It can't go away, you see. And... and it follows you around like a ghost.
- Eun-ju, "stepmother"

I feel that way sometimes. I sympathize.

I'll jump on the bandwagon and say this: 2011 is going to be the best year of my life. No more holding back, self doubting and plenty of psychologically balanced heroes like Perseus. He was the best one, check the story books if you don't believe me.

So here's to a great year. I'm excited, are you?

Eggs?
I was given some good advice a while back, while at the end of my rope and stuck in a major creative slump: "Do the opposite of what you're doing now."

Seems simple enough, right? But how exactly does one figure out what the opposite is...especially when you can't pinpoint what it is you're doing at the moment...

New/old motto to live my life by:

Triscuts?

Ghosts?

P.s. : Acrylic on Canvas. Feedback?
